⭐ Student Tips

• The minute hand moves 1 minute each tick (6°). Count by 5s on the bold ticks, then add the extra minutes.

• The hour hand moves between numbers as minutes pass; read the hour it just passed, then add the minutes.

• Say it like “4:23” (hour first, then minutes). Add a leading zero for 1–9 minutes (e.g., 7:05).

📘 Teaching Instruction

• Model: read the hour hand first (which number it’s just past), then count minutes by 5s and ones.

• Use mixed practice (o’clock, half, quarter, random minutes) to strengthen flexibility.

• Ask “How do you know?” to elicit strategies: counting by 5s, noticing the hour hand’s position, and reading extra minutes.
