Multiplying Decimals by 1 Digit
Multiply decimal numbers by single digit whole numbers.
Student Tips:
- Multiply like normal, ignoring the decimal point at first
- Count decimal places in the original number (3.45 has 2 places)
- Put the decimal point back in your answer with the same number of places
- Example: 3.45 × 2 = 6.90 (multiply 345 × 2 = 690, then put decimal 2 places from right)
Teaching Instruction: Start with money examples ($3.45 × 2). Use grid paper to show decimal place value. Practice “multiply first, decimal second” method. Connect to repeated addition (3.45 + 3.45 = 6.90).
