Evaluating Algebraic Expressions

Substitute numbers for variables and calculate the result.

Student Tips:

  • Replace each letter with the given number
  • If x = 3 and the expression is 2x + 5, substitute: 2(3) + 5
  • Follow order of operations: 2(3) + 5 = 6 + 5 = 11
  • Be careful with negative numbers: if x = -2, then x² = (-2)² = 4
  • Write out each step clearly

Teaching Instruction: Start with simple expressions with one variable. Practice substitution separately from calculation. Use parentheses when substituting to avoid sign errors. Connect to real-world formulas (area, perimeter, distance).
