Equivalent Fractions Practice

Find fractions that have the same value but different numerators and denominators.

Student Tips:

  • Equivalent fractions are equal: 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6
  • Multiply or divide top and bottom by the same number
  • To make 1/3 equivalent: 1×2/3×2 = 2/6, or 1×4/3×4 = 4/12
  • Use visual models: pizza slices, pie charts, fraction bars
  • Cross multiply to check: 1×4 = 4 and 2×2 = 4, so 1/2 = 2/4

Teaching Instruction: Use fraction circles, bars, or grids for visual understanding. Start with halves, thirds, and fourths. Show that you’re not changing the value, just the appearance. Practice both making equivalent fractions and identifying them.
