Comparing Decimals

Use <, >, or = to compare two decimal numbers.

Student Tips:

  • Line up the decimal points
  • Start from the left and compare each digit
  • First different digit tells you which is bigger
  • 4.67 > 4.59 because 6 > 5 in the tenths place
  • Add zeros to make comparing easier: 3.5 = 3.50

Teaching Instruction: Use place value charts side by side. Practice with money comparisons ($4.67 vs $4.59). Show number line positioning. Emphasize that you only need to find the first different digit to make the comparison.
